Why I Do What I Do

I love what I do. I love being a massage therapist. It has been my passion since I was 18 yrs old and since then has become much of who I am. I wear my heart on my sleeve and have always wanted to help those in pain, who are sad, lonely, scared, or even just in need of a friend, and massage allows me to do all that and more.
To me, that hour with my client is more than just relaxing muscles and getting rid of some aches and pains. It’s about giving them a safe place to let down their guard, open up, let go of what emotional stress or worries are toxic to their bodies and get them started on a healthier path. I am not a psychiatrist, but I am a good listener, and sometimes that’s all that someone needs.
A lot of what I do is about reading people. Truly listening and paying attention to what they are looking for, what they need, for that session. Sometimes it’s a quiet space away from the kids or a hectic business office. A moment in time when they don’t have to be at attention, on the go, when they can slow down, take a deep breath, and forget about their every day noise.
Then there’s the people who need relief from chronic pain that no-one else can seem to get rid of. They’re at the end of their rope, or can barely move from a recent injury. My best quality as an RMT, in my opinion, is that I can take what I’ve learned in the past 17 yrs of doing massage and use my intuition, and my instincts to try new things, think outside of the box, and often get results when no-one else could.
Humility is another characteristic that is crucial in an RMT. Knowing your strengths is great, but knowing your weaknesses and your limitations is just as important. I have a team of practitioners that I refer out to when I need to in order to ensure that my clients are always getting the best care possible.
I am about building everyone up- I compete with no-one. I believe that there is enough business out there for everyone and I have faith in what i have to offer as an RMT that if anyone needs to see another RMT or practitioner at any time, I dont get offended. I am happy that they are receiving treatment and feeling better. Because that’s what its all about. At the end of the day, I do this to help people feel better.
Working out of my home has given me more control over my hours, my availability, and allowed me to take charge of my business and build it into my ideal job. It warms my heart hearing my client’s reactions of the newly renovated basement clinic and how they love the space. It is so important to me that my clinic makes people feel comfortable, safe, and confident that they are with a professional, capable RMT. I have done massage for 17 years, in 5 cities, 4 different clinic settings, through 2 pregnancies, and now my own business. I am a veteran in the field and through my experience have gained the confidence to know that I am not only good at what I do, I am REALLY good at what I do. So, here’s to another 17 years. I am excited to see what the future has in store for me.
