Growing Pains and Massage

What are growing pains?

Growing pains are muscle pains that some kids feel in both legs from their bones growing faster than the muscles can adjust. They’re usually felt in the front of the thighs, in the calves and behind the knees. The pain can be described as a dull ache, or severe throbbing pain. The pain tends to come and go, and kids may have them for months or even years! They usually happen in the afternoons or evenings and can cause your child to wake up throughout the night due to pain. The pains can start around 3-4  years of age but can also affect kids ages 8-12. If your child is experiencing pain in only one leg, this could be a sign of a more severe health issue and should be looked at by a physician.

What can you do?

Massage is the best form of treatment for this condition. Gentle muscle stripping can lengthen the muscles enough to relieve the pain and the flushing of tissues will help rid their muscles of any build up of lactic acid and toxins. During a treatment for growing pains it is very common for the massage therapist to perform some assisted stretches or recommend some stretching to do at home for home care. Heat is also indicated.

During any massage with an adolescent or child, the parent or guardian is always welcome to be present for the assessment and treatment of the child. All precautions will be made to help your child feel comfortable and safe during the entire massage. Just like adults, your child has the right to end the massage at any time if they don’t feel comfortable or don’t like the treatment. The RMT will always check with the child to make sure that the techniques aren’t causing too much discomfort for the child.

Disrobing: We always want our families to feel comfortable during any treatment. The child is welcome to wear a shirt and shorts for the massage and proper draping techniques will still be done with the top sheet. Socks and shoes are to be removed for the massage.
